Security and Privacy RxRite® provides wireless and Internet-based electronic prescription services to various health care professionals and organisations. Through the provision of its services RxRite has access to personally identifiable health information, that it acquires during the course of providing services. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 and the regulations thereunder (HIPAA) regulate the use and storage of individually identifiable health information. HIPAA requires that individually identifiable health information be securely stored in such a way that protects the confidentiality, integrity and availability of individually identifiable health information. HIPAA requires that administrative, physical and technical safeguards be implemented to protect individually identifiable health information. HIPAA prohibits the disclosure of individually identifiable health information, except as permitted by law. Security At RxRite, the security and integrity of all prescription information entered and maintained, from the standpoint of both patients and healthcare professionals, is of the utmost importance to us. When registered users access the RxRite electronic prescription network, secure web and wireless pages are utilized for the entry and display of all prescription transactions and other personally identifiable health information. Only authenticated physicians and pharmacy providers can gain access to RxRite, by entering their unique user name and password. All information is stored in secure databases behind firewalls. Secure Technology To ensure the integrity and privacy of all prescription transactions and other personally identifiable health information, RxRite uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, 128-bit encryption, the standard for secure communications over the Internet. SSL software is supported by Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Where necessary, the information entered is encrypted for transmission over the Internet. Encryption involves the coding of information to ensure its security. Electronic prescriptions created and transmitted via RxRite are far more secure than conventional handwritten, faxed, or telephoned prescriptions. Privacy Patient Confidentiality RxRite is committed to protecting the privacy of all personally identifiable information entered and stored in the system. Specifically, other than the electronic transmittal of the prescription to the pharmacy, with confirming information back to the prescribing physician, no other information, unless as RxRite may otherwise be required by law to disclose will be shared with any party without the consent of the patient. Physician Confidentiality As a healthcare utility, we understand the highly sensitive nature of individual prescriptions and other personally identifiable health information and that healthcare professionals, like patients, have certain concerns about the accessibility of such information by others. We believe that, with particular care, the RxRite electronic prescription network can actually enhance privacy protection, improve patient care and serve as a key cornerstone for an ever-improving information and evidence-based health system. Benefits of Electronic Prescriptions RxRite indeed fills an important gap in the information needed to enhance patient care and to facilitate continuity of care across care settings. Patients can be assured that physicians and other health professionals and providers using RxRite will have timely and accurate access to their prescription histories. The arguments for a move toward the common use of electronic prescriptions are compelling. Electronic prescriptions are more legible, accurate, safe and secure than conventional hand-written or telephoned prescriptions. Commitment to Privacy Although encryption, digital signatures and electronic authentication and security systems can together provide for improved privacy protection, they will not do the job if those persons and organizations responsible for preserving the confidentiality of the information do not follow fair information practices. RxRite has put stringent measures in place to ensure that appropriate security arrangements and fair information practices have been fully implemented. Our priority is protecting your privacy. Questions Questions regarding our policies on privacy should be directed to our Privacy Coordinator. Just send an email to privacy@rxrite.com. We will do our best to answer any specific questions you may have. |
